Any Thoughts On Texas Rewriting The History Textbooks To Sanitize American History?

This happened last year, but I am interested in hearing your thoughts. The State of Texas wanted to engage in history revisionism for its state curriculum; in effect, the revisions consist of a conservative re-imagining and wishful thinking of U.S. history (akin to some state bans on teaching evolution in biology class). Some of the changes in the history books would promote the idea that the U.S. was founded as a “Christian Nation” by the Founding Fathers, and painting Reagan and Reaganomics as major successes while claiming FDR and the New Deal was failures.

Actually it was a long-running debate amongst the Texas School Board, not the legislature, and I can assure you that Texas has a very diverse philosophical make-up. The “Dinosaurs aren’t real and Jesus was an American” crowd are a small minority with a big voice. But I do recommend the Creation Science Museum in Glen Rose. It’s a hoot.

Realistically, all of our history textbooks are revisionist history to some extent.

…………………………………………….THE MESSAGE…………………………………………

MAN HAS A BOOK OF HISTORY, AND THE ALMIGHTY HAS HIS BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE!

AMERICA AND IT’S SIBLING WHITE NATIONS ABROAD ARE COMING TO AN END.

THE ALMIGHTY HAS MADE HIS DECREE. HIS DECREE WILL NOT BE CHANGED.

GOD IS NOT TO BE MOCKED. NATIONS REAP WHAT THEY SOW.

THE APPOINTED TIME IS NEAR.

MAY GOD’S WILL BE DONE.

Sound more like you are the one promoting revisionism, not the Texas state textbook committee.

Texas has had a great effect on school textbooks for a long time, mostly because they buy more of them than any other state.

There can be debate about the Christian nation thing, but it is beyond debate regarding Reagan and FDR.

Reagan’s policies were the impetus behind the longest economic expansion in US history. Read GDP, real wages and job creation significantly increased as a result.

FDR’s policies (which were a continuation of the interventionist, tax-happy Hoover) kept America from a recovery throughout the 1930s. Unemployment did not drop under 10% (and was mostly well above that)until the massive war machine manufacturing kicked in to support WW2.

Facts are facts.

What is happening is that Texas is tossing out some of the politically correct revisionism that has crept INTO the books over the years.

Although it’s true that the US is not a Christian nation in the sense that the1st Amendment doesn’t allow for a national religion, including christianity, to be forced or even promoted upon the people, this country was funded as a Christian nation due to it’s cultural roots and the principles that have come from them. Some of these principles are equal justice, equal opportunity, natural rights, charity, individualism, individual salvation and divine providence. The rights that are mentioned in the Declaration of Independence (“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by THEIR CREATOR with certain unalienable Rights”) and are protected by the Constitution are Natural Rights. These are individual rights that are practiced by the individual and do not require an outside enabler (like government) to make them work. They are defined as being given by God to man. Being such, they cannot be taken away by government. These principles and Christian social behavior has been woven into the fabric of what makes America America.

When Reagan came into office, the country was stuck in stagnation and covered by a malaise (like now) that our best days were behind us. He did three things to change that. In ’81 he gave Paul Volcker of the Fed cover to reign in the dollar and break our addiction to printing money. It contributed to a recession. He also cut taxes across the board which included a cut of the highest tax rate from 70% down to 28%, the second part of which was implemented in mid-’86. By mid-’83, a big recovery was underway. The economy was growing by 7% and unemployment was dropping significantly and continually though the rest of his presidency. All this led to a new, strong financial foundation for the country that lasted for another 17 years. It was strong enough to shrug off an S&L scandal/bailout and a recession. In addition, just like FDR during the Great Depression, Reagan and his commentary reminded Americans of all the things that made America great. He have REAL hope of getting those things back again. America did.

FDR came into office in 1933 although he did some things with the banks that were wise and successful, his New Deal policies were Progressive reconstruction of the country. They caused the country to linger in depression for another 7 years. Then in 1940, he was forced to buy planes, tanks, ships, bombs, bullets and bean. This was trickle-down economics (usually a Conservative thing) aimed straight at business. The depression was over in less than a year. From an economic point of view, he also kept unemployment low buy putting a whole lot of people jobs in the military. This didn’t work before, like with the CCC, because he ignored and even distrusted business. This is kinda like how one can’t start an engine when it is in gear.
