A Question For The Christians, Atheists, And Agnostics…?

What’s with the flame wars? Christians: If we’re supposed to love others as we love ourselves then why are so many of us attacking anyone who believes differently than we do? Doesn’t that kind of contradict one of our primary moral beliefs? And what’s with all the questions trying to make evolutionary theory look stupid? I mean, seriously, for one, there’s nothing you can do or say that will take away from the validity of the theory. It’s a solid and well evidenced one, so it’s asinine to think anything you say on here will make an evolutionist change their beliefs. Second, if you are going to question it, why not at least make an attempt to learn something about the science and concepts behind it. You’ll find that it’s not stupid at all, it’s rather a very complex and well thought out theory as to how the current forms of life came to be. Second, take time to learn the difference between evolution and abiogenesis. Evolution has nothing to do with the origin of life or anything related (as so many on here seem to think), merely with how life has changed over the course of our history, is changing now, and how it effects us.Athiests/Agnostics: Why are the antics of the religious extremists and the crazies generalized the entire Christian population? I mean, I know there are some downright crazy “Christians” out there who seem to think it’s their duty to shove the Word down people’s throats, but really, the majority of Christians, or at least those I know, don’t believe that way. If you look around you’ll find that there are many rational and educated Christians out there. In fact, Christians have made some great scientific contributions (albeit a small number). For instance, Gregor Mendel was a priest, but he also helped pioneer the study of heredity and traits in science through his experiments with the pea plants. It very rare to find a biology book that doesn’t make mention of his work. I guess what I’m getting at is why are people getting so heated over people have different belief sets? I’m a Christian, but I don’t look at someone differently because they’re an atheist or a Muslim or whatever religion. I also have friends that are atheists and they don’t look at me or any of their other friends differently because of their beliefs. What I’ve noticed is that, often, when someone on here asks a question regarding religion or science, many of the answers are one side attacking the other for the sole purpose of attacking. I mean, there’s rarely even any thought put into it from either side, just attacking an belittling. It just doesn’t make much sense to me.What do you think?”In my country, USA, the religious right is inserting themselves into my life. Their religious beliefs determine who can get married, what research is funded and my tax money even goes to “faith based” groups.” — That’s a good point and I’ve always believed that religion and government should be kept separate. As for the “who should get married” bit, I think if someone want to marry another person they should be allowed to do so, regardless of gender/sexuality. It’s their choice, not ours. As far as “tax money”, I don’t know much about that as I’m not yet 18, but I’ll do some research.”Basically, there will never be peace because some people feel happier believing in all the crazy Christian beliefs, and others such as myself feel happier believing in nothing.” / “I think I’m happy with who I am.” — Exactly! That’s what I was trying to get at. If someone feels what they believe is right, then what give someone the right to try to make them believe something else? It’s their choice.”I’m amazed that you “don’t look at someone differently because they’re an atheist or a Muslim”. I mean, for a Christian, that’s really an odd thing to say. Do you honestly see them as similar to yourself? Do you have any idea what those people believe?” –No, I really don’t. The way I see it is, if you believe in evolution then you have strong evidence to substantiate your beliefs. And if you follow any other religion than it takes just as much faith on your part as it must on mine, so I respect that. People have a right to believe what they want, IMO.”Their reaction is always, ‘how do you know how to be a good person?’ ‘where do you get your values?’ ‘is someone keeping you from believing?” –I don’t think those people really know what they’re talking about. If they’d studied psychology they’d see that there are explanations for most aspects of human behavior (emotion, morality, etc). Freud gave a great model of how morality could be formed through ID, Ego, & Superego.”So you come as a prophet to R&S, to finally solve all our strifes, is that it?” –Nope, not at all. I don’t think this post will change one thing about how people act on here. I was just hoping to compare and contrast my views with those of others.”And you will notice that “all” atheists (and “all” christians) don’t have the attitudes you describe. It’s a little hypocritical to call us out on stereotyping…by stereotyping” –I didn’t mean to miscommunicate. I wasn’t saying that ALL atheist and Christians do so, I was trying to state that a large number of the ones I’ve seen on here and on forums do. Stereotyping was not what I was trying to do at all. I have known many people in both groups and I honestly say no one person is the same as the other.

You miss the simple fact that all the other religions, atheists and agnostics live in peace and are only attacked by christians!!There is no war just christian attacks met with self defense!!It takes in reality only one to make a quarrel. It is useless for the sheep to pass resolutions in favor of vegetarianism, while the wolf remains of a different opinion. – William Ralph Inge.Do you not recognise that Christians are provoking retaliation and repudiation for their terrible attitudes?!!Perhaps if Christians stopped their intolerant, egotistical, hate filled and bigoted postings things might change!! Perhaps if Christians stopped eschewing education, science, evolution works of fiction and much, much more things might change!! Perhaps if Christians stopped being the only religion opposing human rights and persecuting gays, pro choice and so much more things might change!! Perhaps if Christians stopped demanding freedom of religion whilst they deny it to all non Christians and persecute them things might change!! !!!If Christians rediscovered the god of love and forgiveness and put aside all those terrible human emotions things would definitely change!!!!Why are Christians so afraid of people who simply do not believe in any god?!!!! Surely it can only be because they are so afraid that atheist are right and they are wrong or it would not bother them!!!!!!Time for Christians to understand that it is not about god, jesus or belief but about the terrible Christians attitudes and behaviour!!As soon as they rediscover the loving god Christianity used to have and start acting like it the problem will cease!!!

Wow, you actually spent your Saturday night typing that up?

Basically, there will never be peace because some people feel happier believing in all the crazy Christian beliefs, and others such as myself feel happier believing in nothing.

In my country, USA, the religious right is inserting themselves into my life. Their religious beliefs determine who can get married, what research is funded and my tax money even goes to “faith based” groups.

I care because it matters.

The last time religion ran things, we got the Dark Ages.

And you will notice that “all” atheists (and “all” christians) don’t have the attitudes you describe. It’s a little hypocritical to call us out on stereotyping…by stereotyping.

I think that I’m happy with who I am.

LOL, THEORY of evolution. THEORY. I reckon it did happen though. As a tool.

I think you have some good points, but trying to reform the debating tradition here at yahoo may not be worth the effort of such a long post. Sorry, I’m in a cynical mood. I may feel differently about it tomorrow.

You answered your own question. There are people from all religions and non religions that feel it is necessary to speak badly of those that do not believe as they do. It is not all people from any one group but people in general. No it doesn’t make sense but you will never get them to see your way. Some people just need everyone to think as they do, they are not strong enough in their own beliefs to accept others the way they are.
